The hardest chip jobs to fill are on the tools, not in research. Technicians with a certificate or two-year degree are 39% of the projected US gap, and AI skills are spreading through every level: more than 10,000 of Taiwan's 47,000 monthly chip openings in 2026, one in four, are AI-related.

Skills by credential

Equipment and Facilities Technicians Are the Hardest Hires

Most of the projected US gap is in skills learned on tools and plant systems, not in research.

The Semiconductor Industry Association's workforce study found that 39% of the US jobs likely to go unfilled by 2030 are technicians, most with a certificate or two-year degree. The skills behind those jobs are mechanical, electrical and vacuum work on tools that cost tens of millions of dollars each, plus the fab's water, gas and power systems:

Micron told Idaho educators in 2026 that it needs about 200 technicians for its Boise fabs due in 2027; its apprenticeship had produced about 50.

AI and data

One in Four Taiwan Chip Openings Is AI-Related

Taiwan semiconductor job openings in 2026: an average of 47,000 a month, of which more than 10,000, about one in four, are AI-related. AI-related openings grew 67% over five years. In Taiwan, where most of the world's leading-edge chips are made, the 104 Job Bank counted an average of 47,000 semiconductor openings a month in 2026, up more than 20%, and more than 10,000 of them, one in four, are AI-related. Listings open to graduates of any major rose two to three percentage points, a sign that employers are training people in-house. In fabs, AI work means fault detection on tool sensor data, run-to-run process control and defect classification on inspection images; the software stack is on Process Control.

Advanced packaging

Packaging Now Needs Front-End Skills

Advanced packaging moved from a back-end cost center to the constraint on AI chip output, and it needs skills that used to sit in the front end: wafer-level cleanliness, alignment to under a micron for hybrid bonding, and thermal and warpage control for HBM stacks of 12 to 16 dies. The tools are on Hybrid Bonding and the process on Flip-Chip Bonding. US packaging plants planned by Amkor in Peoria, TSMC in Phoenix and SK hynix in West Lafayette all need this workforce by 2028 or 2029.

Core disciplines

Fabs Hire From Other Engineering Fields and Train In-House

The core fab disciplines have not changed: process engineers who own a step such as etch or deposition, integration engineers who tie the steps into a working transistor, metrology engineers, and equipment, facilities and EHS technicians. What has changed is the share of the work done with data rather than by hand. A McKinsey and SEMI Foundation study reported in October 2026 found only about 3% of US engineering graduates choose chip careers, so most fabs now hire from mechanical, electrical, chemical and software programs and train on the job.
